- Thursday, 27 October 2016: The Prologue (updated 2016-10-31)
And we’re off! The 2016 edition of the world famous (in NZ) 5 Passes Tour has begun! Pete has everything under control, no panic here, none! Only one bike broken before we started, and replaced by the great Scotty Browns. Results are available down below, and you can see that there is some fierce competition already. Get a good night’s sleep, and we’ll see you bright eyed and bushy tailed at 6.30am tomorrow morning! (Note: coffees available at the Commodore Hotel from 5.45 am… phew!)
(Please note: these results have been updated, as of 2016-10-31.)
- Friday, 28 October 2016: Christchurch to Hanmer Springs (updated 2016-10-31)
Day 1: Christchurch to Hanmer
We have some preliminary results for the end of Stage 1, George’s Road, Waipara. Please note that we are aware that a couple of rider’s RF chips have not been picked up, by our crack team of timing engineers will be providing these results… Sprint positions to be declared following review of the video tapes. And I think that there were a couple of riders that stayed in the left hand lane somewhere along the way. (Watch out, Traffic Management Ted is watching very carefully…!)
Congrats to all riders, and especially the jersey winners (sorry Brian…). The results for the end of Day 1 are all below. Get a good night’s sleep, and we’ll see you for breakfast at 6am!
- Saturday, 29 October 2016: Hanmer Springs to Greymouth (updated 2016-10-31)
Day 2: Hanmer Springs to Greymouth–the longest day!.
Day started abruptly at 5.19am, with an earthquake. OK, it wasn’t a biggie, but enough of a jolt to wake you up. And then the next thing of note was the fresh dusting of snow on the hills around Hanmer Springs–looks beautiful. Maybe less than ideal for cycling in, though, as it means the weather is cold–brr! On the up side, there was no head wind coming out of Hanmer, which was awesome.
We have some preliminary stage results for the Hanmer Springs to Spring’s Junction. Race Director Pete needs to scrutinise these, which means he’s open to corrections, clarifications… and bribes 😉
Updated at 6pm:
Hot off the presses are the Sprint Points results…
Evening all! What a cracker of a day. I think we’ve pretty much had it all: rain, hail, snow at the top of Lewis Pass. More rain, more rain and more rain at Ikamatua, and so much rain that Race Directory Pete made the good call to neutralise the final stage of the day. And then, as we arrived into Greymouth–we were welcomed with bright, glorious sunshine!
Here are the full results or the day:
- Sunday, 30 October 2016: Greymouth to Arthur's Pass (updated 2016-10-31)
Sunday–Day 3–on the 5 Passes is all about Arthur’s Pass. That is the metaphorical mountain in everyone’s minds as they race through the Aratika and Rotomanu sprints. And what a fantastic day it was today! More sun and clear skies over Greymouth–unheard of. We bumped into an old 5 Passes Yellow Jersey winner, Steve Gurney, as well as the mayor of Greymouth, Tony Kokshoorn.
A lovely neutral ride out to Stillwater, when it was then “game on” for the first of the two sprints. 15kms after the Aratika sprint came the Rotomanu sprint, followed by a short jaunt to Lake Brunner Road, and a refuel before heading up to the Otira Pub.
The Arthur’s Pass climb!
We had near perfect weather, and all the riders did such an awesome job of nutting down and getting into the job. Congratulations all for “knocking off that bastard.”
A much appreciated, and very welcomed BBQ, courtesy of New Zealand Home Loans, followed by dinner and a well earned rest at the end of the day.
